What Is a Recovery Drink? An Honest Definition

For You by Recovery+ · Trust

What is a recovery drink, actually?

A recovery drink is a drink that covers what training cost you and what adaptation needs after. Concretely: fluid, electrolytes, and a meaningful protein dose, around 20g, the amount shown to near-maximally drive muscle protein synthesis in dose-response research1. Everything else on the shelf that borrows the word is covering a fraction of that list and the label will tell you which fraction.

Most of what India is handed as recovery covers one column. Sports drinks are carbohydrate fuel: useful mid-session on long endurance days, not recovery. Electrolyte-only drinks and sachets rehydrate, which matters, and then stop: zero protein. Milky protein shakes bring the protein and usually skip the electrolytes, often adding sugar for the ride. None of this makes those drinks bad. It makes them incomplete, and incompleteness sold as completeness is the category's quiet problem.

What you're handed What it covers What recovery still needs
Sports drink Carbs and some sodium: mid-session fuel Protein. All of it
Electrolyte drink / sachet Fluid and salts Protein, again
Milky protein shake Protein Electrolytes; and check the sugar it rode in on
Plain water Fluid Salts and protein both
A recovery drink, properly defined Fluid + electrolytes + ~20g protein Only the things no can does: sleep and the next meal

Recovery also doesn't end when the bottle does. Muscle protein synthesis responds to protein spread through the day, not one heroic dose2, and the deepest repair work happens during sleep. So the honest definition has a second half: a recovery drink covers the immediate costs, and a recovery system respects the rest, the day's protein distribution and a protected night. That's the full checklist, and it's the standard we think you should hold every brand to, ours included.

  1. Protein ≥ 20g per serving. Below that, it's a hydration product wearing recovery's jacket1.
  2. Zero sugar, unless endurance fuel is explicitly the goal. Recovery and refuelling are different jobs.
  3. Electrolytes present, not implied by a leaf on the label.
  4. Per-serving honesty. Numbers stated per serving you'd actually drink, not per 100g of powder. The full method is on the label-reading guide.
  5. Third-party or lab verification you can see, not just a claim you're asked to trust. Independent testing of Indian protein supplements found widespread mislabelling3, so this criterion isn't paranoia.

This checklist is why Recovery+ exists. We built ELXR AM and ELXR PM as India's first AM/PM recovery drink system to pass all five criteria: 20g of isolate-grade clear whey per can, zero sugar, electrolytes in the morning can, every number lab-tested and printed, and Batch 001 sealed and serialized so each of the 3,000 cans traces to its batch. The wider comparison with shakes and gym-counter options lives on the post-workout drinks page; the full daily architecture is the Protocol.

FAQ

What is the best recovery drink in India?

The honest answer: judge any candidate by five criteria, at least 20g protein per serving, zero sugar unless fuel is the goal, electrolytes present, per-serving label honesty, and lab or third-party verification. We built ELXR to pass all five and we print the lab numbers, but the criteria matter more than any brand name, including ours.

Do I need a recovery drink if I only train 3 days a week?

Recovery is daily nutrition, not a post-gym ritual: the protein gap in an Indian diet doesn't take rest days. That said, food-first is completely legitimate. If your plate reliably delivers enough protein and fluid, you don't need any can. A recovery drink earns its place on the days your plate doesn't.

Is there a recovery drink in India that isn't just electrolytes?

Yes, and that gap is exactly why ELXR was built: 20g of protein plus electrolytes in one sealed can, zero sugar. Most of what's sold as recovery in India is hydration only, which handles one column of the checklist and leaves the protein column empty.

What's the difference between a recovery drink and a protein shake?

A shake is one ingredient: protein, usually milky, often with sugar alongside. A recovery drink is the full checklist: fluid, electrolytes and the protein dose together. A shake can be part of recovery; it isn't the whole job.
