What Is HRV? Trends Beat Numbers

For You by Recovery+ · Muscle Recovery

What is HRV, and should you trust the number on your watch?

HRV, heart rate variability, is the beat-to-beat variation in the timing of your heartbeats1, and it's a usable window on how recovered you are. Generally, higher variability signals better recovery, a nervous system relaxed enough to let the rhythm breathe, while a suppressed HRV suggests your body is still working: training load, poor sleep, alcohol, illness or stress2.

The single most important sentence about HRV: it's deeply individual. One person's excellent morning reading is another's warning sign. Comparing your number to a friend's, or to a chart from the internet, is comparing thermostats across different houses. The only baseline that means anything is your own, tracked over weeks.

What moves it's unglamorous. Sleep, first and always. Training load: hard blocks suppress HRV, and that's expected, not alarming. Alcohol, reliably and for more than one night. Illness, often before you feel it. And stress, the ambient kind that doesn't feel like an event. Notice what's missing from that list: nothing exotic. There's no HRV hack that isn't just a recovery habit wearing a tech costume.

So how do you improve it? The boring pillars, executed repeatedly: sleep regularity above all, a training progression that ramps rather than spikes, real hydration, and the discipline not to train through illness. Wearables measure HRV adequately for this purpose, but morning-to-morning noise is genuinely large: a bad reading can be a sensor artifact, a late meal, or nothing. Watch the 7-day trend, not the day. One low morning is weather; a falling week is climate.

Where this touches us, stated plainly: we make no HRV claims. HRV is a readout, and the inputs it reflects, adequate protein, protected sleep, managed load, are the same recovery levers covered on They are also exactly what ELXR AM and ELXR PM are built to supply.the muscle recovery page and built into the Protocol. Fix the inputs and the readout follows; chase the readout and you're polishing a mirror.

FAQ

What is a good HRV number?

There isn't a universal one, and anyone selling you a target is skipping the science. HRV varies enormously between healthy people, so the only meaningful comparison is against your own multi-week baseline. Trends beat numbers, every time.

Does low HRV mean I shouldn't train?

One low morning: no, train, it's probably noise or normal load. A falling 7-day trend: that's a real signal to go easier, check your sleep, and look for what's draining you, illness, alcohol, or a ramp that got too steep.

How fast can HRV improve?

Think in weeks, not days. Consistent sleep timing, a sane training progression and cutting the reliable suppressors like alcohol show up in the trend over two to four weeks. Anything promising to raise HRV overnight is selling you the readout, not the recovery.
