Starting Fibre: Why Week One Feels Gassy & Loud

Week one on fibre: why it's noisy, and why that's normal

Start a serious fibre habit and your gut will probably comment. Gas, some bloating, audible rumbling for the first several days, this is the normal, documented response to a sudden jump in fermentable fibre, and it settles within a week or two. Most brands won't tell you this. We'd rather you hear it from us than discover it and wonder.

What's actually happening: prebiotic fibre arrives in your colon undigested, that's its job1, and your gut bacteria throw a feast. Fermentation produces gas as a by-product, and a gut that's been living on refined grains has a bacterial population that isn't yet sized for the new food supply. Give it days, and it recalibrates.

1 can a day, week one1–2 weeks to settleNoise isn't damage
Timeline What to expect
Days 1–4 The noisy phase, gas, mild bloating, rumbling. Peak novelty for your gut bacteria
Days 5–10 Settling, the noise drops as your microbes adjust to the new normal
Week 2 onward The payoff phase, the outcome trials measure at these doses is better regularity2

The one-can rule. If you're new to fibre, start Recovery+ at one can a day for week one, ELXR PM, the evening can, is the gentler dose (~6g vs ~15g). Move to the full AM + PM day once your gut has stopped commenting. Drink water alongside; take the can with or near food if you're sensitive.

Who should be genuinely careful rather than just patient: anyone with IBS on a low-FODMAP protocol, or under treatment for gut conditions, fermentable fibre is exactly what those protocols restrict, so follow your clinician's plan first. And pain, as opposed to noise, is never an adaptation symptom; that's a doctor conversation. For everyone else, week one is the toll booth on a road worth taking. The full context lives on the prebiotics explainer and the Protocol.

FAQ

Is bloating a sign something's wrong?

In week one of a fibre jump, usually no, it's fermentation finding its level, and it fades within one to two weeks. Persistent pain, or bloating that worsens past two weeks, is a see-your-doctor signal, not an adaptation phase.

How do I make week one easier?

Start with half the dose, one can a day, evening first. Spread fibre across the day rather than one sitting, drink water, and keep it near meals. The adjustment is dose-dependent; ramping beats diving.

Does the noise mean it's working?

It means fermentation is happening, which is the mechanism doing its thing, but the goal isn't noise, it's the quiet regularity that follows once your gut adapts.
