The magnesium forms war, and the study nobody quotes
Walk the magnesium aisle and you'll meet a war. Glycinate says it's the gentlest. Citrate says it's the proven one. Threonate says it's for your brain. Oxide says nothing, you'll find it inside the cheapest labels, in the fine print, which is exactly where you'll find it. Every form claims to be the answer. Almost none of them show you a human study. This page does.
What a "form" actually is. Magnesium never travels alone. It's always bound to something, an oxide, a citrate, two glycine molecules, a threonate. That partner molecule is the delivery vehicle, nothing more. Your body absorbs magnesium as a bare ion, and to become an ion, the form has to fully dissolve first1. So the forms war is really a single question in costume: which partner lets go in water, and how fast? Lab testing of commercial magnesium products finds they differ enormously on exactly this2.
The one study that ran the actual race. There's one randomized, double-blind human trial that put the three big contenders, citrate, an amino-acid chelate (the glycinate class), and oxide, head to head for 60 days3. Citrate won. Not the chelate. The premium "chelated" form the aisle charges the most for came second, and oxide came last, the same oxide result human studies keep finding45. Notice the pattern: the winner was the most soluble form. The loser was the one that barely dissolves.

The glycine math. Glycinate's best pitch isn't absorption. It's the bundle: magnesium plus glycine, an amino acid your body uses every night. That's a genuinely smart pitch, so take it seriously and read the label. Magnesium bisglycinate is roughly one-seventh magnesium; nearly all the rest is glycine. A typical premium serving, 1,200mg of bisglycinate, delivers about 150mg of magnesium and, at best, about 1g of glycine. The human research on glycine used about 3g10. You can't close that gap by swallowing more capsules, because the magnesium climbs with it past what any label should give you in a day. The capsule writes a promise its own chemistry can't cash.
What actually decides it in India, in order of what moves the needle:
- State. Dissolved beats compressed. A tablet must break apart and dissolve before a single ion is available, and mineral tablets fail that step more often than anyone admits11. A magnesium already in solution has skipped the failure point entirely.
- Form. If it must be a tablet, soluble citrate-class has the human evidence35. Oxide is the one to walk past4.
- Timing. Indian cereal-legume plates are rich in phytates, which bind minerals eaten alongside them12, and Indian diets carry some of the highest phytate loads measured13. Tannin-rich drinks taken at the same time pile on14. None of this is a flaw in the food; it's a scheduling problem. Give minerals their own slot, hours from the big plates and the chai round.
- Dose pattern. Human absorption data shows the body takes up a smaller fraction of a big single dose15. Moderate and consistent beats heroic and occasional.
Where we landed. This is the logic ELXR PM is built on. We didn't pick a side in the forms war, we made it irrelevant. So: which type of magnesium is best? If you're choosing among tablets, the boring answer is the well-studied soluble one, not the most expensive one. But the better answer is to stop optimizing the salt and start optimizing the delivery, dissolved over compressed, timed over random, consistent over heroic. Food first, always: nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes and greens are real magnesium sources. Why tablets fail even before the form question: the delivery problem. And if you suspect an actual deficiency, that's a doctor-and-blood-test conversation, not a shelf decision.
