Protein on the Go in India: Every Option Ranked
For You by Recovery+ · Protein
How do you hit protein when you're never near a kitchen?
The fastest zero-preparation protein is a sealed, ready-to-drink can: a fixed 20g dose, the per-meal amount that near-maximally drives muscle protein synthesis1, with no shaker, no water hunt, no cleanup. Everything else portable in India involves a trade: preparation, refrigeration, sugar, or a dose too small to matter.

Here's the honest ranking, because most of these options are good at something:
- Boiled eggs, paneer cubes. Real food, real protein. The catch is shelf life: a few hours unrefrigerated in Indian heat, and they announce themselves in a closed office. Excellent at home, fragile in transit.
- Roasted chana, makhana, nuts. Genuinely good snacks that survive a bag for weeks. But be honest about the dose: a handful is 5 to 8g of protein. They're a supporting act, not the meal.
- Milk cartons. Everywhere, cheap, and about 8g per glass-sized carton. Half a dose, and often sweetened in flavoured versions: read the pack.
- Protein bars. Portable and dosed, but flip the label: many Indian bars carry dessert-grade sugar next to the protein. A bar that's honest about both numbers is a fine option. The label-decoding guide shows what to check.
- Protein powder. Cheapest per gram, full dose, and the most logistics: a shaker, clean water you trust, and a shaker to wash afterwards, on a train, at a desk, in a gym bag that already smells like one.
- A sealed RTD can. Fixed dose, zero prep, zero measuring, best fridge-cold. The trade is price per gram versus powder: you're paying for the dissolving, the dosing and the sealing already being done.
Our answer to this list is the format itself. ELXR is 250ml, sealed, pre-dissolved isolate-grade clear whey at 20g per can, zero sugar, designed to live in a fridge and leave it cold. No shaker exists in this system. The comparison against powder economics, where powder honestly wins on rupees per gram, is on the can vs shake page.
The fridge-staple framing is the one we'd leave you with: on-the-go protein fails when it requires decisions. A stocked fridge turns the decision into reach-and-open, morning can on the way out, evening can at 9:30pm when the kitchen is closed. The full routine is the Protocol.

FAQ
How do I hit protein while travelling?
Layer it: roasted chana or nuts in the bag for the small doses, and one fixed-dose item per day that needs no preparation, a sealed RTD can or an honestly-labelled bar. Relying on hotel or highway food to deliver 20g on schedule is how most travel weeks end up protein-short.
Which protein needs no preparation at all?
A sealed ready-to-drink can: open and drink, dose fixed at 20g, nothing to mix, measure or wash. Bars are close behind but check their sugar. Everything else, eggs, paneer, powder, involves prep, cold storage or cleanup somewhere.
What's a good protein drink to keep in the fridge?
One that meets the recovery checklist: 20g protein per serving, zero sugar, and per-serving lab-tested numbers on the label. That's the spec ELXR was built to, one can for the morning, one for 9:30pm, both best cold.
