How Much Protein Per Day? The Indian Math
For You by Recovery+ · Protein
How much protein do you need per day? Do the math in 30 seconds
The short answer: ICMR's baseline is 0.83g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, and ICMR-NIN's own guidance notes cereal-based diets need closer to ~1g/kg because cereal protein is harder to use1. Training regularly? International sports-nutrition consensus ranges run higher still, commonly 1.2–2g/kg depending on training load. Your weight, times the right multiplier, that's the whole calculation.
0.83 G PER KG, PER DAY. THE ICMR BASELINE
| Body weight | Baseline day (~1g/kg) | Training regularly (~1.4–1.6g/kg) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 kg | ~50g | ~70–80g |
| 60 kg | ~60g | ~85–95g |
| 70 kg | ~70g | ~100–110g |
| 80 kg | ~80g | ~110–130g |
Two refinements make the number real. First, per-meal dose: research repeatedly lands around 20g of quality protein as the amount that meaningfully stimulates muscle protein synthesis in a sitting2, so a day of 5g dribs never quite switches the machinery on. Second, distribution: spreading protein across the day outperforms cramming it into dinner3, which is precisely backwards from how the Indian day usually eats, light breakfast, cereal lunch, everything at night.
Against that math, the average plate, ~12% of energy from protein4, can leave an ordinary day 20–40g short. Closing it: an extra katori of dal, paneer or soya at meals, and concentrated protein where the day runs emptiest. That last part is the shape of the Recovery+ Protocol, ELXR AM at breakfast, ELXR PM at night, 20g each: two proper doses2 at the two hours the Indian plate usually forgets. FAQ
Can the body only absorb 30g of protein at once?
That's a myth in its popular form, your body absorbs essentially all of it. What saturates per sitting is the muscle-building response; the rest is still used for everything else protein does. Distribution helps, waste doesn't really happen.
Is too much protein bad for kidneys?
In healthy people, intakes within normal high-protein ranges haven't shown kidney harm in research. Diagnosed kidney conditions are a different world, protein targets there come from your nephrologist, not the internet.
Do I need more protein as I age?
The research trend says yes, older adults appear to need larger per-meal doses to trigger the same muscle response, which makes protein distribution more important with each decade, not less.
